There is an Ending, There is a Beginning

I can remember the day it all changed.

In fact, I can remember the moment it all changed. It’s etched into my memory.

Eye contact. A feeling passing from my brain into the soles of my feet…into my soul. A knowing. A catalyst.

And in that moment I felt something both beginning and ending.

1874 days have passed since that moment. And I still can call its sensations up like it was last week. But, finally, today, I can say that I feel that I have arrived on the other side of that transition.

Catapulted into a new chapter of my life. No turning back. So many tears. So many losses. So many blessings. So many feelings. (So many art journal pages!)

I’ve experienced many transitions in my life–we all do. And they all began with an ending.

Some endings are very obvious: a relationship ends, a life ends, an address changes.

Some endings are more liminal, spanning a period of time, not really noticeable until one day you look up and see/feel the difference: aging, for example.

Some endings clearly initiate from a beginning: a birth, a new job, a marriage. And these beginnings have endings connected with them: the end of a childfree life, the end of a period of unemployment or an old job, the end of singledom.

Some of these endings/beginnings are chosen and some are not. Some blindside us and some are expected.

One way or another, an ending hurls us into a period of transition and IT’S HARD.

My art journaling practice has saved my life during my transitions. It has given me a language for expression beyond words. It has helped me to release feelings and narratives, in particular grief, fear and anxiety. It brings me satisfaction creatively, emotionally and mentally.

And now, with so many art journals on my shelves it also gives me the evidence of my strength, commitment, and courage, every art journal page a fragment of my self-portrait.
