Art + Politics = Artivism
For a while now I've felt pretty powerless to do anything that makes a difference in our country.
I know I'm not alone in that. Many of you have written to me sharing your despair, rage, and dismay at what is happening in the USA.
Don't get me wrong. I vote. I donate to politicians I support. I host house parties for them. I attend protests and rallies. I call my representatives. Etc. etc. etc.
I try to "be the change."
But can you blame me for feeling like all that barely makes a dent in what's going on?
For the past decade I have chosen not to. Instead, I make art. Making art with my feelings is always a great way to take care of my heart. But these days, making art with my disillusionment is how I explore and express what churns inside me about the ever-growing fascism, racism, homophobia, the patriarchy, genocide, white supremacy, antisemitism, and more in the world.
I call it my personal artivism.
Sometimes I share it on social media, but honestly, I don't spend much time there these days.
But I can share it with you. And you are welcome to share it with others.
Today, in honor of free speech and democracy, I share some pieces of my personal artivism!
