The Power of Immersion
For years, I tried to squeeze my work into small pockets of time—an hour here, a couple of hours there. I’d start an email, dive into a project, and then—poof—I’d have to stop because life called. A client session, a class, a doctor's appointment, laundry. You know how it goes.
Everything felt scattered. Hither and thither.
Plenty of business coaches talk about block scheduling as the key to productivity. I tried. I really did. But no matter how I structured my time, I always felt behind. Nothing ever truly finished. I was constantly playing catch-up.
Then, this past January, I had an idea: what if I gave myself full immersion days?
Everything changed.
Creating Space for Deep Work
I started treating one day a week as a retreat for my work. I turned off my phone, silenced notifications, and even told my retired partner, Mary, please, no interruptions! I cleared distractions and created space to focus.
But it wasn’t just about eliminating noise—it was about making the day sacred.
I’d start with small rituals:
✨ Lighting a candle on my altar
✨ Pulling an oracle card
✨ Sipping a warm cup of tea
✨ Reading a few pages from a book in my studio nook
Then, I’d dive in.
And let me tell you—OMG, I am in love with this way of working. Obsessed, actually.
The results? Incredible. And not just in what I accomplish, but in how I feel about my work.
Why Immersion Works
Here’s what I love about my immersion days:
✔️ I fine-tune my attention, focusing on just one or two projects
✔️ I drop into a flow state—where time disappears and ideas flourish
✔️ I dig deep and then deeper
✔️ I come up with new ideas (so many ideas!)
✔️ I actually finish things—like, really finish them
✔️ I create space for even more creativity
Now, I have an ongoing list of immersion day projects. Writing, filming, designing, brainstorming—I add to the list as ideas emerge. And I fiercely protect this time. No squeezing in extra appointments. No breaking my own boundaries.
And the best part? I long for these days. I crave them. They have become my favorite part of my work rhythm.
The Magic of Immersion
Immersion isn’t just for work. It’s a powerful way to approach anything that calls for deep attention. Whether it’s creative expression, self-reflection, or simply carving out sacred time for yourself, immersion lets you:
🌿 Quiet the noise of daily life
🌿 Make space for what’s bubbling up inside you
🌿 Honor your stories, your heart, your art, your Self
🌿 Get lost in creative flow
🌿 Dig deep into the fertile soil of your life
It’s a gift we rarely give ourselves. But when we do? It changes everything.
So, if you’ve been feeling scattered—pulled in a million directions—what would it look like to give yourself a day of immersion?
Try it. You might just fall in love with it too.
